The Federal Government has announced a major transformation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), confirming that the iconic khaki uniform worn by corps members for decades will be replaced with Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing the scheme and promoting local industries.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who explained that the decision aligns with the Federal Government's commitment to supporting indigenous manufacturing and strengthening Nigeria's economy.

According to the Minister, the new Adire uniform will be produced locally, creating opportunities for Nigerian textile manufacturers and artisans.

«"It's Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have a textile industry. Let's put our money back into the country," he said.»

The transition from the long-standing military-style khaki uniform and combat boots is intended to:

- Promote Nigerian-made products.

- Boost the local textile and fashion industry.

- Create more jobs for indigenous fabric producers and artisans.

- Reduce dependence on imported materials.

- Foster national identity and cultural pride through the use of Adire.

The government believes that channeling public spending toward locally produced fabrics will have a positive impact on the nation's economy while showcasing Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.

The uniform change is only one aspect of the ongoing restructuring of the 53-year-old NYSC scheme.

The Minister also disclosed that the posting system will be reviewed to ensure corps members are deployed based on:

- Their professional qualifications.

- Their fields of specialization.

- Safety considerations, especially in areas affected by insecurity.

The new approach is expected to improve productivity while enhancing the welfare and security of corps members during their service year.

What This Means for Prospective Corps Members

If implemented, future batches of corps members may no longer wear the familiar khaki uniform that has become a symbol of the NYSC since its establishment. Instead, they are expected to receive professionally designed Adire attire that reflects Nigerian culture while supporting local economic growth.
