 UNILORIN Reaffirms Commitment to Students' Welfare Amid Concerns Over Private Hostel Fees

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its students, assuring members of the University community that students remain the institution's foremost priority.

The assurance was contained in a press statement issued by the University's Directorate of Corporate Affairs following a meeting between the University Management and a delegation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State Axis. The meeting was convened in response to concerns arising from the recent review of accommodation fees in privately owned hostels located within the University campus.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the engagement provided an opportunity for the University Management to clarify issues surrounding the approved hostel fee review and provide verified information to students, parents, and the general public.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor at the meeting, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Morenikeji Alex Akanmu, explained that the hostels affected by the fee review are privately owned facilities operating within the University's premises. While the University does not own the hostels, it regulates their operations to ensure compliance with approved standards and safeguard the interests of students.

Dr. Akanmu disclosed that although hostel operators initially proposed an increase of nearly 100 per cent, the University Management rejected the proposal and engaged in negotiations to protect students from excessive financial burden. Following extensive deliberations, both parties agreed on a 30 per cent increase, bringing the approved accommodation charges to ₦255,000 for two-person rooms, ₦234,000 for three-person rooms, and ₦204,000 for four-person rooms, excluding other approved charges.

He further clarified that the caution fee remains refundable, provided no damage is recorded, while the ₦36,400 utility charge covers essential services throughout the academic session.

The University also directed hostel operators to improve the quality of facilities through renovations and the provision of reliable alternative power sources, including solar energy systems, as part of the conditions for approving the revised fees.

Following the engagement, the NANS Kwara State leadership expressed satisfaction with the explanations provided by the University Management, commending the institution's transparent and open-door approach to addressing students' concerns.

The student body also encouraged all stakeholders, including media organisations and bloggers, to verify information through official channels before publication in order to prevent misinformation and unnecessary anxiety among students.

The University reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, transparency, and policies that promote the welfare and best interests of students while ensuring sustainable improvements in campus accommodation.
