NELFUND Debunks Fake Reports on Suspension of Students’ Upkeep Allowance

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed as false and misleading the viral reports claiming that the Federal Government has suspended students’ upkeep allowance payments under the student loan scheme.

In an official statement released on Thursday, May 28, 2026, NELFUND described the circulating publications as fabricated content deliberately designed to spread panic, confusion, and distrust among students and the general public.

According to the agency, the fake reports included an AI-generated newspaper front page falsely presented as a publication from The Nigerian Tribune alongside a fabricated statement wrongly attributed to NELFUND.

NELFUND clarified that no directive has been issued by either the Federal Government or the agency concerning the suspension of upkeep allowances for beneficiaries of the student loan scheme.

The Fund emphasized that the publications did not originate from any authorized government source and urged Nigerians to rely only on verified information from its official communication channels.

“NELFUND remains committed to the transparent and efficient disbursement of student loans and upkeep support in line with its mandate,” the statement noted.

The agency also advised the public to avoid sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary anxiety among students and parents nationwide.

Signed by the Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the statement reaffirmed NELFUND’s dedication to expanding access to higher education through sustainable financing initiatives.

Students and stakeholders were encouraged to follow NELFUND’s verified social media platforms and official website for authentic updates regarding the student loan programme.
