End of an Era: Reflecting on the One-Year Leadership of UNILORIN Students' Union President, Comrade Adelu Idris Ayomo
As the University of Ilorin ushers in a new administration following the inauguration of the 39th Students' Union Executive Council, the curtain officially falls on the one-year leadership of Comrade Adelu Idris Ayomo, whose administration leaves behind a legacy of student representation, welfare advocacy, institutional collaboration, and purposeful engagement.
Elected as the 38th Executive President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union in 2025, Adelu assumed office with a vision to build a more inclusive, accessible, and responsive Students' Union. Throughout his tenure, his administration remained committed to strengthening the relationship between students and the University Management while promoting policies and initiatives aimed at improving students' academic and social experiences.
Championing Students' Welfare
One of the defining characteristics of the administration was its consistent advocacy for students' welfare. The Union engaged the University Management on several issues affecting students, including accommodation, transportation, electricity supply, water availability, academic concerns, and campus infrastructure.
Perhaps one of the most notable moments of the administration came during the review of accommodation fees for privately owned hostels within the University. Acting as the voice of the students, the Union actively participated in negotiations with the University Management, ensuring students' concerns were adequately represented. The administration also maintained transparency by providing regular updates throughout the process.
Beyond advocacy, the administration facilitated the restoration of solar-powered electricity systems in sections of the Old College Female Hostel, contributing to improved living conditions for resident students.
Infrastructure Development
Recognising the need for functional student facilities, the administration embarked on the renovation of the Students' Union Building, transforming it into a more conducive environment for meetings, student activities, and administrative operations.
A major milestone was the installation of a 24-hour solar-powered electricity system at the Students' Union Building, ensuring uninterrupted access for students. The administration also oversaw the rehabilitation of Students' Union sit-outs on both the Main Campus and the College of Health Sciences, creating better recreational and study spaces.
Improving Campus Transportation
Transportation remained another major area of focus. Through continuous engagement with the University Management, the Students' Union supported initiatives that led to the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, aimed at improving campus mobility and reducing transportation challenges experienced by students.
Academic Support and Student Representation
The administration maintained active engagement with the University on academic matters, including examinations, registration processes, and student-related policies. It consistently provided students with verified information, ensuring they remained informed about important developments within the University.
Following concerns raised during examinations, the administration engaged relevant authorities and later commended improvements made to the University's Computer-Based Test (CBT) system after receiving positive feedback from students.
The Union also encouraged dialogue over confrontation, promoting peaceful engagement and constructive communication in resolving issues affecting the student community.
Sports, Leadership and Student Engagement
Beyond welfare and academics, the administration invested in student life by supporting sporting activities, recreational programmes, and leadership initiatives. It encouraged broader participation in inter-faculty competitions and other campus sporting events, recognizing sports as an important avenue for unity, wellness, and talent development.
The administration also partnered with student associations, faculty bodies, departmental executives, volunteers, and campus organisations to organise educational, entrepreneurial, leadership, and community development programmes that enriched students' experiences beyond the classroom.
Accessibility and Open Communication
One of the hallmarks of Adelu's administration was accessibility. Through official statements, media engagements, stakeholder meetings, and continuous interaction with students, the Union maintained open lines of communication throughout the tenure.
Students were regularly updated on University policies, welfare issues, admission-related matters, accommodation updates, and other developments affecting campus life.
Building Stronger Partnerships
The administration fostered cordial relationships with the University Management, alumni, corporate organisations, and other stakeholders, securing support for several Students' Union activities and reinforcing collaboration for the benefit of the student community.
A Legacy of Service
As Comrade Adelu Idris Ayomo formally hands over leadership to Comrade Mozeed Adam, the newly inaugurated 39th Executive President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union, he concludes a constitutional one-year tenure defined by service, dialogue, advocacy, and responsible leadership.
While every administration encounters its unique challenges, Adelu's tenure will be remembered for prioritising students' welfare, strengthening institutional collaboration, improving communication, supporting infrastructure development, promoting sports and extracurricular engagement, and sustaining a peaceful relationship between students and the University Management.
His administration has contributed to the continuous growth of the Students' Union and leaves behind a foundation upon which subsequent administrations can build.
As a new chapter begins, the University community looks forward with optimism, trusting that the incoming leadership will consolidate on these achievements while introducing innovative ideas that further advance the interests of UNILORIN students.
TEAM PALADIN congratulates Comrade Adelu Idris Ayomo on the successful completion of his tenure and appreciates his service to the University of Ilorin community. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to Comrade Mozeed Adam and the newly inaugurated Students' Union Executive Council, wishing them wisdom, courage, and outstanding success as they embark on the responsibility of serving the Great Unilorites.
