The Fine Line Between Decency and Personal Expression: A Review of UNILORIN’s Dress Regulations
The University of Ilorin has once again drawn attention to its regulations on indecent dressing and conduct, outlining a range of offences and corresponding disciplinary measures aimed at promoting decency, discipline, and the institution's core values.
According to the university's guidelines, students found violating prescribed standards of appearance and conduct may face sanctions ranging from warnings and communal punishment to rustication for one or two academic semesters, depending on the severity of the offence.
The regulations prohibit clothing that exposes sensitive parts of the body, transparent outfits, body-hugging dresses, short and skimpy dresses above the knee, obscene inscriptions on clothing, and other forms of dressing considered inappropriate within the university environment. The policy also addresses issues such as tattoos, sagging trousers, tattered jeans, excessive make-up, and certain forms of body piercing.
Male students are specifically prohibited from wearing earrings, plaiting or weaving their hair, and engaging in body piercings, while restrictions are also placed on hairstyles deemed unkempt or unconventional. Female students are similarly advised against extreme fashion accessories and hair extensions beyond approved limits.
Beyond dress code violations, the university's guidelines also cover behavioural conduct. Acts such as inappropriate physical contact, prolonged hugging, kissing, and other actions considered offensive within the institution's code of conduct attract stricter sanctions, including rustication.
University authorities maintain that the regulations are designed to uphold moral standards, preserve the institution's reputation, and foster an environment conducive to learning and character development.
The renewed attention on the policy has generated conversations among students and stakeholders, with some viewing the measures as necessary for maintaining discipline, while others continue to debate the balance between institutional regulations and personal expression.
As discussions continue, students are advised to familiarize themselves with the university's dress code and conduct regulations to avoid disciplinary actions and ensure compliance with established standards.
