Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Suspends Lecturer Accused of Sexual Assault as Investigation Continues
The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended a lecturer, Raphael Segun Larayetan, following allegations of sexual assault involving an undergraduate student, Roseline, from the Department of English and Literary Studies.
Larayetan, who was serving as an examination officer at the time of the alleged incident, has been replaced by another lecturer, Adaku Amaechi. However, the university did not publicly announce the suspension, raising concerns about transparency in handling the case.
The matter gained public attention after an investigative report by FIJ (Foundation for Investigative Journalism) revealed that Roseline’s final-year academic results were allegedly altered after the assault. The report also indicated that the suspended lecturer had a history of harassment complaints from other students.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Following the allegations, FUOYE constituted two investigative panels to look into the case. The second panel reportedly questioned Roseline on December 15, but no official findings, conclusions, or timelines have been communicated to her or the public.
Despite the ongoing investigations, the lack of clear updates has left the victim in a state of uncertainty regarding her academic future.
Academic Impact on the Victim
As a result of missing or tampered results, Roseline was reportedly unable to participate in summer school examinations, which would have allowed her to improve her grades. This has significantly affected her academic progress and emotional well-being.
The prolonged silence from the university has deepened concerns about institutional accountability and student protection, particularly in cases involving sexual misconduct.
University Responds
FUOYE’s spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing but could not provide a definite timeline for its conclusion. This has further intensified concerns, as the victim remains unsure of when—or if—her academic situation will be resolved.
Growing Calls for Accountability
The case has sparked renewed conversations around sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the protection of students, and the need for transparent disciplinary processes. Advocates continue to call on universities to prioritize the safety, dignity, and academic rights of students while ensuring swift and fair investigations.
As the investigation continues, many are urging FUOYE to provide clarity, justice, and appropriate support for the victim.
