Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano(YUMSUK) Takes Major Step Towards Establishing Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

In a significant move to advance Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano (YUMSUK) towards becoming a leading institution in Northern Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, received a report on August 9th, 2024. The report, presented by a committee led by renowned Nephrologist and Acting Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Aliyu Abdu, outlined the roadmap for the establishment of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at YUMSUK.

The committee, commissioned by the university’s management, was tasked with assessing the feasibility and laying down the foundation for this ambitious project. During the presentation, Professor Abdu emphasized the university's readiness, citing both robust physical infrastructure and a strategic staffing plan. The faculty, once established, is expected to offer four undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS), Bachelor of Radiography, Bachelor of Nursing, and Doctor of Physiotherapy.

In his remarks, Professor Abdu highlighted the university's "strength" in terms of both resources and human capital. He mentioned that the faculty's staffing would be supported by a blend of full-time academics, supplemented by professionals sourced through sabbatical leaves, visiting professorships, and transfers of service from other institutions. Additionally, Professor Abdu called for a resource verification exercise by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to facilitate the initiation of the programs.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor Kurawa expressed his gratitude to the committee for their diligent work and commitment to the university's vision. He assured that the university would implement the committee’s recommendations, reinforcing his administration’s determination to elevate YUMSUK's status within the academic landscape of Nigeria.

The establishment of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences marks a critical step forward in YUMSUK's development. It aligns with Professor Kurawa’s broader strategic goals of enhancing the university’s academic offerings and positioning it as a center of excellence not just in the region but across the entire country. As the university awaits the NUC's resource verification, there is an excitement about the potential impact of these new programs on both the university community and the healthcare sector in Nigeria.

This initiative shows YUMSUK's commitment to providing quality education and contributing to the nation’s health sector by producing skilled professionals in various allied health fields. With the support of the university’s management and the dedicated efforts of its staff, the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences is poised to become a hallmark of excellence at Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano.
